Who Gets Custody of the Family Dog? | Money.com

Once again, the news is full of stories about families struggling over custody issues - only now the primary issue is who gets custody of the family dog?  True pet lovers will tell you that having pets is no different than having children.  They are members of our family, and vulnerable ones at that.  They don't grow up, go to college, earn a living.  Once we make the decision to get a pet, it's a lifetime commitment.

Family law lawyers are discovering that the issues related to pets are important to their clients.  Resolving those issues may not be so simple as the family law statutes don't address pet custody issues.  As a result, families have to fashion their own solutions.  Sometimes this is only possible with the help of a skilled mediator - an impartial third party that can guide the couple through the decision making process.

Before you go to court, go to mediation  It save time, money and emotional energy.  For more information on pet custody mediation, you can reach out to me at 407-977-8080.

Pets increasingly at center of divorce battles

Planning on getting married?  Getting a prenuptial agreement (a/k/a a prenup)?  If you have pets considering adding provisions regarding your shared pets (a prepup)! As the incidence of disputes over shared custody of pets continues to rise, thinking about how the pets would be shared in the event of a split is a good decision.

Far too often, couples fail to address how the pets will be handled in the event of a breakup only to find out that their "ass-umption" about what would happen is wrong.  Pets are not furniture, they are beloved members of our family and they deserve to be treated with the same consideration as our children.

Want more information about the current state of pet custody?  Here's a case that demonstrates the courts are taking a harder look at this issue.  Better to create your own solution than to leave something this important to the decision making power of the courts.

Divorcing couple struggles with pet custody - chicagotribune.com

Are couples using their pets as pawns in order to prolong the pain of divorce?  Most courts will not hear disputes related to the custody of pets - this is because pets still are viewed as property - not a living, breathing being whose needs and emotions also need to be taken into consideration.

Divorce is difficult enough.  The pets suffer from the loss of daily contact with the people they love.  They have not changed their loyalties just because one spouse has decided they can't/don't want to live with another.  Our pets love us unconditionally - they don't want a divorce.

Protect your pets when your relationship sours - ask a pet mediator to help you resolve your dispute.

Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith divorce goes to the dogs; pet custody issue - National Celebrity Headlines | Examiner.com

Here's another celebrity couple in the news where the divorce has sparked a debate over who will get the dogs.  Pet custody can be a big issue in a divorce - especially true because most courts are equipped to handle pet custody issues in the same way they handle "time sharing" for the kids.

Pet custody disputes are best settled in mediation where the couple can craft their own solution and not end up with one imposed arbitrarily by the court.  Don't let a non-family member decide the fate for your pets.  Take pet custody issues into your own hands and get an experienced mediator, preferably a pet .lover who can help work through these sensitive issues.
